NEET UG 2024 SCAM: Highlights Of Students' Protests And SC Verdict

The National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) is one of the most important exams in India for students aspiring to enter the medical field. The National Testing Authority (NTA) administers the test on one national day each year. However, there have been several cases of NEET cheating in recent years, and the problem is getting worse as more students and parents try to get an unfair advantage in the exam. NTA is expected to notify 1500 candidates of the NEET UG re-exam

Candidates who obtained "grace marks" as a result of exam time loss now have two options: repeat the exam on June 23 or accept their original NEET-UG score, which does not contain grace marks.

The NEET UG "Scam"

There have been reports of candidates being given grace marks on their NEET scorecards unethically, which has raised concerns about the integrity of the exam process. This issue has been brought to the notice of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the National Testing Agency (NTA) has been investigating the matter.

The Supreme Court of India (SCI) on Tuesday issued a notice on a petition seeking the implementation of NEET-UG 2024, amid serious concerns over gaps in the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test-Graduation-2024 after the 19th century.

The Supreme Court refused to block the discussion. "Sanctity has been violated; we need a response," the court said while tagging the petition filed by ten NEET candidates and putting it on hold with the petition pending hearing on July 8.

According to PTI, it also sought a response from the National Testing Authority (NTA) on the request for renewal of the NEET-UG 2024 examination due to ‘leaks of paper’ and other ‘irregularities’.

Use Of Unethical Means

The NTA conducted the medical entrance test for admission to undergraduate medical programs on May 5. It is important to note that such malpractices and frauds undermine the integrity of the examination process and create an unfair advantage for some candidates. It is important to address such issues with utmost urgency and take appropriate steps to ensure that the integrity and fairness of the examination process remain intact and that no candidate is given undue advantage through unethical means.

Some are questioning the fact that when the results were supposed to be released on June 14 then why was it overnight on the day of election results.

Is this because of a lack of effective surveillance?

Over the years the rise in NEET scam cases is the lack of effective surveillance during the exam. The exam is conducted in a single day, and the vast number of centers and candidates makes it difficult to monitor every candidate. Despite the presence of invigilators and CCTV cameras, some candidates manage to sneak in their phones or other electronic devices, which they then use to search for answers or communicate with outsiders. Such news was raised this year also so why any strict measure hasn't been taken so far?
According to a PTI report, many NEET aspirants claimed that their marks were increased, resulting in a record 67 candidates, five of whom were from the same examination center.
However, the National Testing Authority (NTA) has refuted the allegations of irregularities. They attributed the rise in their scores to changes in the NCERT syllabus and grace marks for lost time at examination centers.
On the evening of June 5, the NTA announced the NEET results, where five students from an examination center in Haryana were also seen sharing the top rank.

Why a lot of candidates got full marks

The National Testing Agency (NTA) has provided targeted reasons for the tremendous rise in ideal ratings inside the NEET (UG) 2024 exam. Will There Be a Re-Exam?

Following the results' announcement on June 4, 2024, there was a huge controversy. Parents and candidates together demanded an investigation and a "re-exam," claiming that the paper had been leaked at select centres where pupils had performed well.

The issue doesn't stop here, recently, 

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the Modi government has begun "covering up the NEET scam" through Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and the National Testing Agency (NTA).

“If the paper was not leaked in NEET then — why were 13 accused arrested in Bihar due to the paper leak? Did the Economic Offences Unit (EOU) of Patna police not expose the payment of Rs 30 lakh-Rs 50 lakh to the education mafia and organized gangs involved in the racket in exchange for papers?” he said in a post in Hindi on X.
